AGM Activism

Challenge the leaders of the world’s largest companies on the environmental and social issues that matter
From climate change to childhood obesity, biodiversity loss to inequality, we’re facing environmental and social challenges on a global scale. It's so easy to feel powerless.

But the biggest companies in the world – who too often fuel these crises – rely on our savings being invested in them to function. We should have a voice. Our money should power social progress. We hold shares in some of the biggest companies and every year, we organise questions at annual general meetings (AGMs) to challenge them on the issues that matter. We also gather together individual and institutional investors to co-file resolutions on specific topics at companies to demand change. But we can’t do it without people like you!

What is shareholder activism?

AGM – or shareholder – activism aims to take the fight for a fairer, greener, healthier society to the heart of those companies fuelling the crises. At the annual general meetings (AGMs) of publicly listed companies, shareholders get to ask questions that matter to them, vote on resolutions and even file their own.

At ShareAction, we use this opportunity to quiz directors, and hold the company to account on a range of issues, from climate change to gender diversity, healthy food, the living wage and more. It’s an excellent campaigning tool, putting issues that matter on the corporate agenda. And it works. Thanks to pressure of AGM questions we’re seeing more and more of the biggest companies pay the real Living Wage to their staff and huge organisations including Vodafone and BT have signed up to source 100% renewable electricity.

As an AGM activist you would be given support throughout your journey. From helpful guides to hands-on training, we aim to answer all of your AGM questions, and give you the confidence to go along and ask the CEO and Board a question from one of our campaigns.

What else can I do?

Do you own any company shares? Our supporters lend us their shares to attend even more AGMs, as well as increasing our numbers at them. Please get in touch if you are interested in lending us your shares. We couldn’t attend some of the biggest AGMs in the numbers we do without this support.

And don’t forget, part of the reason we go to AGMs is because our pensions are invested in the biggest companies through our pension providers. Half of the money invested in companies comes from our collective pensions. They depend on your money, so it’s only right that you have a say. You can take action to change the world your pension is building at AGMs and in lots of other ways.
